About

Meet Josh

Author, former pastor, father, and fellow traveler, still learning to live from the love I write about.

Where this began

I was about eight years old, standing in a small Lutheran church in Long Beach, California, when something reached me I would spend much of my life trying to understand. Stained glass, golden candles, brass organ pipes, and old hymns sung by ordinary people. I felt deeply connected to God and to the people around me, and somehow completely myself.

No one had to lose themselves for that harmony to exist. Every voice was distinct, yet together they made something none could have made alone. I have kept returning to that morning through ministry, fatherhood, success, failure, and seasons of searching.

What I learned when things fell apart

Much of what I write was born not from having life figured out, but from moments when the life I thought I understood began to come apart. Through loss, disappointment, and the unraveling of things I had worked hard to build, I discovered that love was never something I could earn or manufacture. It was something I had to learn to receive.

Often that love came through other people: friends who stayed, people who listened, unexpected kindness. Two friends, one rooted in Christianity and the other in a spiritual understanding of consciousness, helped me see differently in one of the hardest seasons of my life. Neither gave me a complete explanation. They gave me their presence.

How I see this work

My faith is shaped by the life and teachings of Jesus. I have also learned from philosophy, psychology, contemplative traditions, and many people whose paths look different from mine. I hold a simple conviction: all truth is God's truth, wherever it is found, and my understanding of God will always be smaller than God.

I am not a guru, and I have not mastered the art of living. I forget, react, and begin again. What I offer is companionship, honest questions, and practices that keep helping me find my way back to the light. My hope is that they help you recognize that you are already deeply loved and that your life can become a clearer expression of that love.
